Capt. John Quelch is convicted of piracy.

Hired by Gov. Thomas Dudley and some of the town’s merchants to transport supplies and attack French ships, Quelch instead robs ships arriving and leaving Boston Harbor. Dudley subsequently helps obtain a pardon for Quelch, however, leading to speculation that he and the others may have shared in the pirate’s ill-gotten gains. Quelch is arrested again in 1704.*
